IDENTIFICATION
Regional Noxious. Annual grass.
Green foxtail generally emerges in early spring following periods
of high rainfall. The grass grows in tufts up to a metre in height. Each
of its tiny flowers has 1-3 bristles, giving the clusters a bottle-brush
appearance. Leaves are small flattened blades.
DAMAGE
A nuisance in cultivated fields and irrigated valleys, green foxtail
can be a serious problem in spring-seeded alfalfa, and in small grain
and row crops.
HABITAT
Green foxtail is commonly found in field crops (especially corn),
vegetables, lawns, gardens, and along roadsides and streams. It is found
throughout British Columbia and is considered a major concern to the Peace
River district.
SPREAD
Seeds may be distributed by human activity, animals, birds, and water.
A single plant can produce anywhere from 5,000 to 34,000 seeds, depending
on conditions.
